Umeå welcomes Ship to Gaza: Now is the time for lifting the siege on the people of Gaza!

A rich programme of events is expecting when Ship to Gazas sailing
vessel M/S Estelle arrives in Holmsund, the harbour of Umeå in the north of Sweden.
Thursday May 31 marks the second anniversary of the violent Israeli
commando-attack on the first Freedom Flotilla. Nine people were killed,
one is still in a coma, and around 50 were injured. The attack aroused world
wide resent and led to a diplomatic crisis between Israel and Turkey. Legal
consequences of this act of piracy are yet to come. The storm of critique led to
some easing of the inhumane, illegal and for all parties destructive siege.
Our thoughts are today with the killed and their relatives. We will not
forget them and will celebrate their memory with a minute’s silence:
Çetin Topçuoglu, Ibrahim Bilgen, Ali Haydar Bengi, Cevdet Kiliçlar,
Fahri Yaldiz, Necdet Yildrum, Cengiz Songür, Cengiz Akyüz, Furkan
Doan.
But our thoughts are also with the besieged people of Gaza. In a few
days the siege is running on the sixth year. More than a quarter of
a million children have been born under this absurd imprisonment,
which least of all serves its stated purpose: Security for Israel and its
citizens. On the contrary more and more people start to realise that
the siege is a prime obstacle to a development towards a just and
sustainable peace. No security, but bitterness and violence will be
created through denying people their human rights, and their basic
means of making a living.
This is why we are making a new effort to end the siege. We do this
through sailing all the way between Umeå in the north of Sweden to
Gaza, a distance of 5000 nautical miles. In the ports on our journey
there will be debates, concerts and popular events. But this is not
a pleasure trip. It is not without risk to challenge one of the most
powerful military forces of the world. Last year two of the Freedom
Flotilla boats were sabotaged in Greek and Turkish ports, and Israeli
naval forces forcefully intercepted three boats.
Through our action we are sending a clear signal to the international
community, who declares its commitment to human rights and
international law, but which is paralysed in action when it comes to
intervening against Israel’s blatant violation of these. We are also
sending a message of hope to the besieged Palestinians in Gaza: You
are not alone. The world has not forgotten. With united forces we
will end the siege.
